How to Change a Car Battery Without Losing Settings

A car battery, just like other parts of your vehicle, needs to be changed every once in a while. There average life span of a car battery is 3-years. And up to 5 years for a top of the range car batteries. Which means you have to contend with lost preprogrammed car settings every 2-5 years. And you will probably want to know how to replace your car battery without having to reset your car settings.

There are two ways to change your car battery without losing your preprogrammed settings;

Using a Secondary Power Source

The logic behind this method revolves around ensuring the dashboard has enough power to stay on while you change the car battery. To avoid going off and losing the settings. This way, you get to retain the car’s memory.

Use jumper cables to connect a 12V secondary battery to the car cables. Match the red jumper cable wire to the red car cable. And the black car cable to the black jumper cable wire. Clip the crocodile clips to the metal part of the car cables. The other option is to connect a jumper pack to the car cables to provide the power necessary to keep the car dashboard on.

Match the colors as with the secondary battery. Then turn on the jumper pack. Proceed to remove the primary battery and make sure you do not disconnect the secondary battery. Or all the effort spent connecting the secondary battery will be for naught.

Then place the replacement battery in the battery tray and connect it to the car cables. Then turn on your car and test to see if the settings have been reset. The easiest way to do so is by turning on the radio. If it connects to the last channel you listened to, you did not lose your car settings.

Using A Memory Saver

A memory saver is like a power bank that can be used to keep powering your car’s dashboard while you change the battery. The power will prevent the car’s computer memory from being reset.  Attach the memory saver battery to the OBDII connector, which is located near the cigarette lighter on the driver’s side. Or near the steering wheel column.

Once the memory saver has been connected, proceed to remove the old battery and connect the new battery. Then check to see if the memory saver worked.
