How to Remove a Broken Sparkplug

A spark plug is a device that passes electric current to the combustion chamber in a vehicle. Generally, it aids the ignition of an automobile. Every automobile has a spark plug but does every driver know how to change one? Further, are they aware of when to change them?

The modern car has a lot of technology installed in it. Ironically, when it comes to a spark plug change, you have to do it manually! But, how will you know when to change one?

Installing A New Spark Plug

New plugs cost will range from $5 to about $40. Further, a mechanic will also charge you more if he/she is to replace them. Whether they broke or not, one thing is constant- you have to change them regularly!

When that time comes, follow the steps below.

  • Firstly, Clean the spark plug hole with a lint-free cloth first. Check the new spark plug if it is in good condition. Whether the porcelain or the spark boot has broken, do not install!
  • Coat the threads of the spark plug with some oil. Your spark plug will work better this way.
  • Now take two full clockwise turns putting the spark plug in the hole. After that, attach the spark plug to the socket wrench. Continue to turn it clockwise until there is resistance.
  • Be careful not to use too much torque. Aim for a spark plug that is not too fit or too loose.

Can I Use a WD40 To Loosen A Spark Plug?

You are about to remove a spark plug but, you notice it is too tight. Well, do not beat yourself yet! It is a common problem, especially if there has been rust or corrosion around your spark plug. Using a WD40 will come in handy.

Is it possible to break A spark Plug?

Technically, Spark plugs are difficult to break. They should last for a long time ( Copper Spark plugs should go 20,000 Miles. Platinum and Iridium plug should serve for 60,000 Miles. A driver should change the specific spark plugs when they reach the precise target range). It will only break if the engine is old and if you have wrongly installed it. ( Check the above steps for installations)

How not to break spark plugs when removing them. (Tips)

Thorough Cleaning

Before you remove the old plug, you should clean the exterior. Use a compressed air gun to blow away dust particles.

Use A High-Quality Oil

A good oil will penetrate through and make the whole process easy. Failing to use one may result in sudden break-offs.

Use the Right Tools

Use the appropriate tools when removing them.

Don’t Loosen Sparkplugs on a Hot Engine

Wait for the engine to cool before trying to unscrew sparkplugs. Hot engines will hold onto the plugs firmly forcing you to apply more torque to loosen them out. This might break the plug. Moreover, when removing plugs in an old engine, take care when applying heat to loosen the plugs.

Can A Broken Spark Plug Damage The Engine?

Yes, it can. A broken spark plug will surely leave its pieces in the engine. For instance, when the spark plug nut breaks off, it will rattle inside the cylinder and end up destroying the valves. Thus, damaging the engine. A car with broken spark plugs is also prone to accidents.

Removing A Broken Spark Plug

Sometimes you are about to change an old spark plug. Unfortunately, you end up breaking it into pieces. Worse is that the spark plug shell is still stuck while the other parts are out. No need to panic! You can remove the hollowed shell inside. If it is a broken spark plug boot, make sure you pull it out carefully.

You can use a dedicated broken sparkplug remover to make things easier – especially if the top portion of the plug that resembles a bold is sheered off.

For the aluminium head stuck, you will notice a hollow space in it. When removing it, firstly, you will need to make sure that the engine is cold. Wear Protective Gear then, get the following tools:

  • Square Cut Easy Out
  • Hammer
  • Breaker Bar
  • Socket Wrench
  • Penetrating Oil/PB blaster

Now, Carefully:

  • Pour in Penetrating Oil/ PB blaster into the hollow space of the broken spark plug. Make sure to give it a few minutes for the oil to soak in the piece.
  • After that, insert the square-cut easy out into the piece. Do not use a spiral cut easy out. It will expand the shell, hence making it hard to extract the hollow space.
  • Stroke the hammer onto the Square fit into the broken spark plug piece. Use very minimal torque. ( Once again, the target is to make sure the shell does not expand further)
  • Instantly, attach the socket wrench onto the Easy Out. Carefully, turn it counterclockwise. Repeat the action until the broken spark plug comes out. Use a breaker bar if it is hard to turn the easy out with a socket wrench.

In a few minutes, it should be out. You can pick the other spark plug pieces out of the engine.
