Now that smart cars are computerized, it is necessary to learn how to reset them if they need to be restored to their original settings to function properly. This applies after a key component in the car has been replaced. It also removes a warning light that does not go away after troubleshooting and repair.
When do you need to reset the electronic parking brake?
You have to reset the parking brake for the brakes to move to their correct position so they can work properly. As such it is crucial that you reset the parking brake after doing the following replacements;
- After replacing the rear brake pads or calipers
- To remove the Electronic Parking Brake warning light
- After repairing the brake pad sensor circuit
- After replacing the servo motor
- After replacing the brake pad sensor
How to Reset the Parking Brake System
Resetting a parking brake is very easy, and you should be able to do it at home. Here are the steps to reset the parking brake on a Jaguar:
- Ensure your vehicle is parked on level ground before you get started.
- Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine.
- Press down on the brake pedal and hold it down throughout the reset process.
- Press the parking brake switch and hold it until the parking brake light flashes several times.
- Wait until the parking brake light stops flashing and remains illuminated.
- Reactivate the parking brake by long pressing the brake switch until the parking brake light on the dashboard turns off.
- Release the foot brake pedal and verify the disengaged parking brake.
Note: The specific process for resetting the parking brake may vary slightly depending on the Jaguar model and year. Refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual or seek professional assistance if unsure.
How to do an OBD Reset
This procedure requires a bit more technical expertise and equipment.
- Connect the diagnostic machine to the Jaguar’s OBD-II port.
- Turn on the diagnostic machine and follow the instructions to access Jaguar’s electronic parking brake module.
- Decode the fault codes related to the parking brake system. To determine the issue and repair or replace the component causing the issue.
- Then clear the fault codes using the diagnostic machine.
- Test the parking brake system to ensure the issue is resolved.
How to Recalibrate the Jaguar ECU module
This step is necessary if the error code is still displayed after resolving any underlying parking brake issues. To recalibrate the Electronic Parking Brake control module, follow the steps below;
- Switch the ignition ‘OFF.’
- Disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 seconds and then reconnect it.
- Next, start the engine and press and release the foot brake five times.
- The message ‘NOT CALIBRATED’ or ‘APPLY FOOT AND PARK BRAKE’ should be displayed on the Instrument Cluster message center. This indicates that the parking brake is in calibration mode.
- Press the footbrake pedal and apply the parking brake using the EPB switch.
- Then release the parking brake and the footbrake, respectively.
- Wait until the brake warning lamp is no longer illuminated on the Instrument Cluster and the ‘NOT CALIBRATED’ message is no longer displayed in the message center.
- Then apply and release the EPB five (5) times to ensure no error is present.
